Security Standard Introduced by the Payment Card Industry

During recent years, severe security breaches where credit card information has been compromised have attracted a lot of attention in the media. The affected e-commerce sites, conventional retailers, payment service providers, banks and credit card companies have been faced with bad publicity, lawsuits and direct financial losses.

As a countermeasure against these criminal acts, the payment card industry (including American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB, MasterCard Worldwide and Visa) founded the PCI Security Standards Council. The council has adopted the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which is a comprehensive security standard related to the handling of credit card data. The PCI DSS outlines security requirements for all businesses that store, process or simply transmit credit card data.
